Most people who quit tracking do not quit because it is hard. They quit because the number stopped meaning anything: the app said one thing, the scale said another, and nothing told them which one was lying. That is a measurement problem, and measurement problems have answers.

Protein, fat and carbohydrate are the three macronutrients your food is made of. Each carries energy, and the three added together are your calorie intake, the fourth number. Calories are not a separate thing you also track; they are what the other three add up to.
That gives you a check. If your logged calories do not match what your logged protein, fat and carbs come to, one of them is wrong. An app that shows all four and lets them disagree is hiding an error, not catching it.
One exception matters if you drink: alcohol carries energy too and is none of the three. On a day with a drink in it, your calories will sit above what the macros add up to, and that gap is not a logging mistake.
A tracked day goes wrong in four places, and they are far from equal.
Less than people think, and more than none. The point of tracking is not to hit a target to the gram. It is to know roughly what you are doing, so that when the scale moves the wrong way you can tell whether it was your intake or something else.
A useful test: your logging needs to be tight enough that a real change is bigger than your measurement error. If a fifteen percent swing in intake would disappear in the noise, you cannot learn anything from the log. If a consistent difference shows up over two or three weeks, it is tight enough.
That also answers “how long do I have to do this”. Until the portions in front of you stop being a guess. For most people that is weeks, not years. You are calibrating your eye, not signing up to weigh food for life.
A macro target is built in two steps. First an energy figure: what your body burns at rest, multiplied by how active your day is, adjusted for what you are trying to do. Then that energy is split into the three macros by rules: protein scaled to your body, fat to a share of your weight, carbohydrate taking whatever energy is left.

Look at the rule, not just the number, because the rules have edges. Protein has a ceiling. Fat has a floor when carbohydrate would otherwise be squeezed to nothing. A target that quietly hits one of those edges looks like an ordinary number unless the calculator says so.
It cannot tell you what you burn. Every calculator estimates from an equation fitted on groups of people, and your own figure can sit above or below it. What tracking gives you is not the true number but a consistent one: log the same way for three weeks and your weight trend tells you what the estimate was worth.
It also cannot tell you whether a day was good. A day inside your targets with no vegetables and no sleep is not better than one slightly over. Macros are three numbers about energy and building material. They are not a score.
Not forever, and not everything. Weigh the foods you eat most often, for a few weeks. That calibrates your eye, and estimating gets far closer afterwards. Calorie-dense foods reward the scale most: oils, nut butters, cheese and grains.
Then one of the two is wrong, and it is usually a database entry. The macros add up to the calories by definition, so a gap means an entry does not describe the food you ate.
If you want the data to mean anything, yes. Four training days and three blanks tell you almost nothing, because the days you skipped are exactly the ones most likely to differ.
